CarFit: Helping Older Drivers be Comfortable and Safe Behind the Wheel
Changes in vision, flexibility, range of motion, and height can make getting behind the wheel of a vehicle a little uncomfortable for older drivers. CarFit is a safety program designed to educate older drivers about how their vehicles should fit them and offer community specific resources and adaptations to increase their comfort and safety level as they drive. Hawkeye Valley Area Agency on Aging is hosting a CarFit event in Iowa Falls on August 10. At the CarFit event trained technicians will conduct a 12-point checklist with each driver. An example of the items check would include driver’s seat position, proper use of mirrors to reduce blind spots, can the pedals be reached properly, and are the turn signal and break lights working properly. After visiting the trained volunteer, drivers will consult with an occupational therapist who will discuss ways drivers can maintain and improve aspects related to their driving health. Improve your driving comfort and safety. Make plans to attend the CarFit event at the Iowa Falls Healthy Lifestyles Center on Wednesday, August 10 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. The Iowa Falls Healthy Lifestyles Center is located at 1217 College Street in Iowa Falls. There is no cost to attend. Pre-registration is required. Register by calling 641-648-4986.
