Look around your neighborhood: Is every fourth home occupied by someone age 60 or older?
According to current statistics, one fourth of Iowa’s people are senior citizens now, and
that number is rapidly increasing. Iowans are simply living longer. The
number of seniors who are most likely to need our help — people
age 85 and older — is doubling each year.
The truth is, this help costs money.
This year, in addition to the help of grants and government funds, Hawkeye Valley
spent an average of $62.50 per person to help people over 60 in our 10 county service area remain
in their own homes. We provided transportation to doctor appointments
for 637 people; Home Delivered Meals for 10,465 people; meals for 14,765
people at our 17 Senior Centers; and in-home care such as help with
bathing and taking medicine to 2,590 people.
The needs are increasing; the costs are
increasing; government funds are not.
